Chelsea had the golden chance to reduce the considerable point gap between the table-toppers Manchester City and them as they faced the Manchester Club at Etihad Stadium. But a stunning goal from Kevin De Bruyne helped Manchester City to a 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s side increased their gap at the top of the Premier League table to 13 points. Chelsea betting will lose its top position if they can’t be in the title race.
The battle between Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel has always been in the headlines since the UEFA Champions League final last season. Both of them are considered to be two of the best master tacticians in football right now. So, whenever they meet each other, it is considered to be a battle of tactical minds too.
This win was Manchester City’s 12th consecutive victory in the Premier League. Following Chelsea’s narrow defeat to the dominant Manchester City on Saturday and Liverpool’s easy win against Brentford on Sunday, Chelsea has officially dropped to third in the table, two points behind Liverpool in second, who also have a match-in-hand.
The home side had only a slight advantage in the first while dominating as Jack Grealish got a pretty good chance to open the scoring. He got the ball after a mistake from the Chelsea midfielder Kovacic. But with the one-on-one with Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, he failed to convert it.
Lukaku got an opportunity in the second half, following a threaded ball from Kovacic, but the Belgian striker could not find a way past opposing goalkeeper Ederson.
Tuchel made some substitutions to make a change in the game. Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic was substituted for Timo Werner on the 69th minute.
But soon after that, City gave the blow to the Blues as De Bruyne scored a stunner after receiving the ball from Joao Cancelo. It was enough for City as they performed well defensively in the next 20 minutes.
After the match, when Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke to the media, it felt like he had given up the title race. He is not that optimistic after City got a lead of 13 points. “We won’t give up, but if City keep on winning every game, nobody can catch them,” Tuchel said.
Pep Guardiola stated that his side was so patient in the game that it gave all three points. “It was absolutely well deserved,” Guardiola said. “We cannot expect ten, 12 chances against that team. They’re European champions.”
“They waited in the transition to punish us and we scored the goal in a transition. We knew exactly what team we were playing and how good they are. In general today, we were so patient,” he added.
